England is under threat of invasion... and though we be on the far side of the world... this ship is our home. This ship, is ENGLAND. So it's every hand to his rope or gun, quick's the word and sharp's the action. After all... surprise is on our side.

I'm sure Charles De Gaulle lived in Petts Wood (Kent) for at least part of WW2. I heard stories of it when I was little, spent a large part of my childhood round there.
They may have raised white flags in recent history, but in medieval times the Normans were double hard bastards. I know they were originally a Viking bloodline, but still assimilated by the French.

Sorry. Churchill's grandfather was John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough and well worth Googling.

Yes it is. I read Churchill's own account in his 6 volume historical account of "2nd World War". The French were in a difficult place with a pro-German government but were typically arrogant in thinking their word could be trusted.
Churchill was a Farage or Trump kind of politician and took no shit having been a soldier. He took part in one of the last ever cavalry charges by the British army. Even escaped being a prisoner of war in the Boer war in South Africa and got all the way back to GB on his own. His grandfather (or great grandfather?) was a general that never once lost a battle in many years of war against the French mostly. Google him for a real heroic character...
Unfortunately, the modern liberal world doesn't allow men of action to run nations anymore except in non-democratic countries...

Branded, yes they played a significant part but it's not the whole story, they could not have done it without US and British aid:
Read what Stalin himself had to say:
Nikita Khrushchev, having served as a military commissar and intermediary between Stalin and his generals during the war, addressed directly the significance of Lend-lease aid in his memoirs:
I would like to express my candid opinion about Stalin’s views on whether the Red Army and the Soviet Union could have coped with Nazi Germany and survived the war without aid from the United States and Britain. First, I would like to tell about some remarks Stalin made and repeated several times when we were “discussing freely” among ourselves. He stated bluntly that if the United States had not helped us, we would not have won the war. If we had had to fight Nazi Germany one on one, we could not have stood up against Germany’s pressure, and we would have lost the war. No one ever discussed this subject officially, and I don’t think Stalin left any written evidence of his opinion, but I will state here that several times in conversations with me he noted that these were the actual circumstances. He never made a special point of holding a conversation on the subject, but when we were engaged in some kind of relaxed conversation, going over international questions of the past and present, and when we would return to the subject of the path we had traveled during the war, that is what he said. When I listened to his remarks, I was fully in agreement with him, and today I am even more so.[30]
Also what Marshal Zhukov had to say:
Today [1963] some say the Allies didn’t really help us… But listen, one cannot deny that the Americans shipped over to us material without which we could not have equipped our armies held in reserve or been able to continue the war.[31]

An interesting conversation with friends in France whose kids were educated there. According to their history lessons the 2nd World War was won by Charles De Gaulle marshalling their forces to beat the Germans.
Of course they acknowledge having had a little bit of help from the Americans and Brits....

I watched that game. It was remarkable, 'cos your lot weren't at the races for the first 30 minutes. Then you clawed your way back and just as it was getting interesting you switched off again.
For a game alien to Chicago it was incredibly well supported. for a game alien to the USA, the commentary team was an uninformed disgrace.
Good effort winning the game, although you might have got some help.
